The news comes via the Crafty Traveller, who notes that fares for cross-channel bookings typically rise substantially as the high season approaches and that popular routes to Spain and Western France quite often sell out over peak weekend and holiday periods.

The Traveller noted that the National Ferry Fortnight would begin on 2 March, which means a number of firms will provide special offers in the coming days, such as Brittany Ferries’ children ride for free programme.

The news comes following the implementation of passenger rights regulations that entitle ferry customers to much of the same treatment as provided to airline customers subjected to travel disruptions.

Under the new rules, travellers whose sailings are delayed or cancelled are able to reclaim up to 50 per cent of their paid fare, except in the case of “extraordinary circumstances” and bade weather. Moreover, they must be provided with complimentary refreshments every 90 minutes of the delay.
