The study, conducted by Which?, polled 8,000 of the consumer group’s travel members regarding 28 airports around the United Kingdom and showed that Birmingham airport was preferred by more individuals than other major gateways, notably Manchester airport as well as London’s Heathrow and Gatwick airports.
In six of the seven categories included in the survey, the facility earned four stars out of five stars. Members were asked to rate each airport that they’ve passed through in the last year in terms of Environment, Airport Design, Parking, Information/Navigation, Catering, Shopping and Queues/Delays.
Airports falling in the ‘large’ category were those handling at least 4 million passengers annually; Birmingham airport is the seventh busiest air gateway in the United Kingdom and the third-busiest facility outside of the capital.
Birmingham airport’s chief executive, Paul Kehoe, said that the survey was indicative of customers’ positive experiences as a result of ongoing hard work and investments into the facility. He added that the airport provided a hassle-free alternative to the overcrowded airports in the south-east and said the survey results were reflective of this.
The airport is amid a £200 million investment scheme; current upgrades in the works include a new control tower, new hangars and plans for a runway extension to cater to the possibility of more long-haul flights.
