Thousands of British travellers faced serious travel misery yesterday after hundreds of flights had to be cancelled to and from Spain. The travel disruption was triggered by a 24-hour strike by workers in Spain. The chaos is likely to extend into today, meaning large numbers of travellers will probably be stranded.

The Spanish strikes have been triggered by austerity measures being implemented by Spain’s government. The socialist government, lumbered by huge debts, has been forced to implement swinging cuts to services and pay. Similar problems afflict many European nations, with protests paralysing countries like Ireland, Portugal, Greece, Slovenia and Lithuania.

In Brussels, thousands of people went out onto the streets in opposition to spending cuts unions see as penalising the workers for a crisis created by bankers. Irish budget carrier Ryanair cancelled most of its flights to and from Spain as well as all of its internal Spanish flights. EasyJet scrapped 50 per cent of its Spanish flights. Flights weren’t the only form of transport struggling with the strikes. In Madrid, protesters threw eggs at buses out on the streets.
