Manchester Airport outranks the competition as global leader when it comes to presence on the Twitter social network. A recent find reports that Manchester Airport does a better job of using the power of Twitter, the newest phenomenon in social networking. Social media firm AirGate Solutions performed a study and found 143 air hubs around the world to have presence on Twitter. The company generated a ranking based on the ratio of passenger numbers at each hub compared to the number of followers each has on Twitter.
The research found Manchester Airport has the tightest engagement with passengers. Other airports follow in Manchester’s wake. Heathrow heads up Boston, Baltimore-Washington and Gatwick airports. Russell Craig, external communications head at Manchester Airport, described such recognition as ‘fantastic’. He went on to illustrated out how Twitter turned into a key communications channel in recent months as problems were caused by bad winter weather and the Icelandic volcanic ash cloud. Manchester Airport used Twitter to make sure customers had the most timely and efficient access to updates as they were being posted. As a result, passengers got critical information at the same time as news organisations.
