According to the carrier, the largest of the cuts will involve the 340 customer service representatives located at various points throughout the US that will lose their jobs on September 14. Other job cuts will come from the closing of the US Airways Club in Las Vegas on September 13 and reducing the number of staff at the carrier’s Phoenix club.
In addition, US Airways will also close down the walk-up ticket counter at its Tempe, Arizona headquarters, which is the last of its ticketing counters located outside of an airport.
On October 5, the airline will also be making the shift to outside contractors at nine airports for ramp service work. Airports involved are mostly those served by regional carriers of US Airways Express, including Austin, El Paso, Boise, Burbank, Long Beach, Colorado Springs, Wichita, Milwaukee, and Omaha.
Combine with increased operating efficiency, the jobs cuts will hopefully make it possible for the airline to run with fewer customer service representatives, spokesman Morgan Durrant said.
He added: “We're running a more efficient airline than we have in years past.”
Employees involved in the cuts were informed earlier in the week, according to a memo issued by COO Robert Isom.
