In an independent survey just released, Manchester Victoria Station followed by Clapham junction in London and Crewe in Cheshire were deemed to be the worst stations, based on customer feedback.
Other stations in the list included Barking, Stockport, Preston, Wigan North Western, Liverpool Central, Warrington Bank Quay and Luton. Having received this jolt, a government development scheme proposed spending a total of fifty million pounds revamping these stations.
On inspection visits, all of the above mentioned stations scored at less than fifty percent of the required standards. Each station had different services offered to each of its passengers and the quality of each of these services varied significantly. Each one of the ‘top’ three stations suffered acutely from overcrowding. Facilities such as car parks and shops are also in urgent need of revamping.
The focus for improvement has usually been on investing in a number of trains along with improving connectivity and reliability, for the last decade. However, for the current decade, the focus has expanded to delivering an improved experience of every train journey. Also considered requirements are improved conditions and services present at each station.
Over the next five years, Network Rail announced plans to improve 2000 stations in and around England and Wales. Around 3.25 billion pounds have been allocated as their budget.
Commuters at each of these stations welcomed the decision
