A number of new airlines providing their services at the Abu Dhabi International Airport has spelled a 12.8% growth in August for the middle eastern airport. The 12.8% increase comprises a 6.2% growth in cargo passage, and a 2.5% growth in passenger traffic.
The growth comes at a time when many airports around the world are struggling to deal with shrinking passenger numbers. The Abu Dhabi airport has, in the recent months, made several upgrades to facilities available at the airport, which now include self-service check-in kiosks and free internet points for travellers.
India and Pakistan are the biggest markets for the airport, coming first and second respectively. These markets contribute to a significant amount of the airport's traffic. The UK and Saudi Arabia come in third and fourth respectively, while traffic to the Australian continent has also showed strong growth in the last few months, propelling the Australian market into fifth position at the Abu Dhabi International Airport.
The growth in passenger traffic to Australia comes as a direct result of a new Athens-Melbourne connection, which attracts passengers travelling on the new Abu Dhabi - Athens route introduced by Etihad. Etihad airlines has also provided new links between Abu Dhabi and Istanbul.
Amongst the most popular city destinations from the airport, London topped the list with 51,757 passengers, and Bangkok came in second with a total of 38,828 passengers. Other popular city links from Abu Dhabi International Airport are Cairo, Doha and Bahrain, together accounting for over 100,000 passengers.
New services provided by China Airlines and Maximus were reported to have contributed to the significant rise in cargo movement at the airport.
