The Emergency Situations Ministry said that no sign of terrorist activity was evident in the incident in which the Boeing-737-500 went down outside the city of Perm, 1,200 kilometres to the east of Moscow. Flight 821 was operated by a subsidiary of Aeroflot and had 6 crew members and 82 passengers on board at the time of the crash. Among the passengers were nationals of several foreign countries, including France, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Switzerland, Turkey and the US.
Although the plane went down in an unpopulated area, it was in sight of residential buildings. Officials of Aeroflot officials reported that the aircraft had been circling at 1,100 meters, in “difficult weather conditions,” when it lost contact with the tower.
The Investigative Committee of the Office of the Federal Prosecutor has said that it is likely the accident was the result of a technical failure.
When the plane came down, it landed on a section of rail track, which was destroyed in the crash, and it also left a trail of debris and engine parts along hundreds of meters of track. Parts of the fuselage were also found alongside the rails.
The section of the Trans-Siberian railway involved was shut down, according to a spokesman for the national rail company.
