Budget airline Ryanair has threatened to slash flights from London’s Stansted airport.

Officials from the Dublin-based airline said on Friday that the company will be forced to reduce the number of flights from the airport by about 9 per cent should its new owner push forward with fee increases.

The news comes on the heels of the £1.5 billion sale of the airport to Manchester Airports Group (MAG); the firm has said it is planning to increase landing and parking fees on airlines by around 6 per cent.

Ryanair officials said the move will mean a reduction of nearly 170 flights per week and that the new fees should be reviewed by the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). The airline’s services currently comprise 70 per cent of all traffic available from the low-cost gateway.

Spokesman Robin Kiely said on behalf of the carrier that Ryanair and other airlines utilising the Essex gateway must question whether the increase of fees was part of a special package designed to persuade MAG to buy the airport.

However, Andrew Harrison, Stansted’s new managing director has said that MAG is looking forward to working alongside Ryanair.
