Wintery conditions forced officials to close Stansted airport for several hours on Wednesday.
Snowfall was reported throughout much of the South and South East of England throughout the day, wreaking havoc on flights in addition to rail travel. And Whilst Gatwick was only closed a short time in the morning, Stansted was closed in excess of three hours beginning at around 6am, delaying thousands of passengers in the process.
A spokesman said on behalf of Stansted that the decision to close the facility was made due to “treacherous” conditions on roadways surrounding the facility. Stansted later re-opened just prior to 10am, according to reports.
Meanwhile, rail services were delayed on several routes from the capital, including all trains bound for Reading, Ashford International and Bentford, as well as between Wealdstone and Hertfortdshire.
According to Essex police, More than 40 accidents were reported in the overnight hours including some entailing substantial injuries. In addition, a 48-year-old man was killed whilst riding his bicycle in Oxfordshire.
The news comes despite clear conditions in the Midlands around many other locations around the United Kingdom; meteorologists said that freezing temperatures will prevail around the capital through the latter half of the week.
