The new service, launched this week, will operate five times weekly in the beginning. AirAsia provides connections with 64 cities in Asia to the new service, including Bali, Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, Phuket and Singapore, from £10; and with Australia for less than £100.

AirAsia’s CEO Tony Fernandes noted: “Since Sir Freddie Laker’s Skytrain, no airline has ever managed to carry passengers this far at such low fares. This is a revolutionary moment for the aviation industry and a great day for passengers, who can have an amazing Asian experience for the price of travelling to Europe.”

Fernandes added: “Our sales have proved this business model not only works, but is flourishing in a tough market. Long-haul legacy carriers have charged too much for too long to millions and millions of passengers, and today we have made the sky a fairer place to fly.”

The airline’s executive went on to say that the company’s ambitions in Europe are beginning to be realized and that it will increase the new UK service to daily basis at even lower fares.

All promotional fares offered at £99 were sold in 48 hours when the sale was launched in November of 2008.
