Flights between the Danish capital and Newcastle are to begin in the coming weeks.

The new service comes via Scandinavian Airlines and will operate twice weekly beginning on 4 February, airport officials said on Wednesday. Roundtrip journeys will take place on Mondays and Fridays amid local efforts to kick start tourism and the regional economy.

Airline bosses said that service will also enable Newcastle customers to connect to a number of key regional destinations from Copenhagen, notably Stockholm, Warsaw, Billund, Oslo and Palanga.

The news marks the third time the carrier has launched the route over the last decade, although airport figureheads said they expect it to prove successful this time around due to the Danish community near Newcastle as well as the attractive airfares on offer.

Newcastle airport’s aviation development manager Chris Sanders said that the flights would also prove useful for the region’s oil and gas sector, as well as for manufacturing firm sand business support personnel. He went on to add that the schedule had been specially timed to ensure that business travellers could work a full day before departure.
