Environmental group ‘Plane Stupid’ has hit the headlines again this week after they cut through a security fence at London City Airport and chained themselves around a business jet. A small group formed a human wheel clamp with locks and chains early on Wednesday morning protesting about the use of private jets.

“Our intention was to stage a corporate takeover of the private jet centre with all our protesters in business suits. Small jets emit between 5-10 times more carbon per passenger than commercial flights. It's time they were grounded for good,” said spokesperson Nancy Birch.

Other protests this group has carried out before was the scaling of parliament in protest at a third runway for Heathrow Airport. In December members of Plane Stupid managed to enter a secure area at Stansted Airport and shut the runway down causing travel chaos for thousands. They were protesting at the proposed building of a second runway there.

Talking of the 2:30am break in at City Airport Birch said: “This is a central, busy airport and a major terrorist target but getting into it was child's play.” She went to remark that they had found a CCTV black spot about 100 metres from a security hut where they used bolt cutters to access the airport.
