The renovations will add new passenger amenities throughout the gateway, and include improved transportation links as well as the new terminal façade.
The actual start of the work on the terminal helps put to rest the rumours that the entire project was being put on hold by the airport’s owners, Bridgepoint Capital, due to the current state of the economy.
The project’s first phase is due for completion by mid-autumn and involves enhancing the airport shuttle and bus service and the creation of a specially-designated taxi zone.
The project’s second phase will commence on completion of phase one, and will focus on improvements to the rapid passenger pick-up and drop off areas and to renovations and improvements to the pedestrian walkways.
Airport chief executive John Parkin commented: "The growing importance and status of Leeds Bradford International Airport is an essential part of the economic vitality of the region."
He added: "We are delighted that development has commenced and are very confident that these works will ensure the continued success of Leeds Bradford International Airport and provide the people of the region with an airport of which they can be proud."
