London’s Heathrow airport saw record traffic numbers last month.

Official figures released this week revealed that the west London gateway saw 4.85 million passengers in February, marking its strongest ever February on record and a year-on-year rise of 1 per cent.

Heathrow Airport Ltd – formerly the BAA – said that the rise comes largely as a result of a 4.4 per cent boost in flights to continental Europe due to the recent takeover of British Midland by British Airways’ parent firm International Airlines Group (IAG).

Among other figures, load factor at the airport, which reveals how full flights were, grew by 2.4 per cent to 69.6 per cent. The number of travellers flying to China saw a substantial increase of nearly 30 per cent, although passengers headed to Africa and Latin America fell by 11.7 per cent and 4.6 per cent, respectively.

Heathrow chief executive Colin Matthews told the media that the February figures are a reflection of the larger and fuller planes being used at the airport rather that the launch of new routes to emerging economies that are vital for Britain.
