Heathrow airport’s re-vamped Terminal 2 will be named in honour of the Queen, officials said this week.

According to a USA Today report issued on Wednesday, the refurbished facility is to be officially dubbed ‘Terminal 2: The Queen's Terminal'. The airport’s operators say that as of now the new structure will be completed in the autumn and will open in June of 2014.

Development director John Holland-Kaye said on behalf of Heathrow Airport Ltd that everyone involved with the airport is very proud of the firm’s longstanding association with the British monarch. He added that the opening of the Queen’s new terminal would help to continue the tradition.

Industry experts have reported that the facility will become the UK hub for Star Alliance carriers, allowing codeshare passengers to easily connect at the west London gateway without changing terminals. Airlines using Terminal 2: The Queen's Terminal will include United, Air China, Lufthansa and ANA, among others.

Meanwhile, the debate continues regarding expansion plans at Heathrow. Last week saw reports saying that the airport is to submit a new proposal ahead of the government’s air capacity review.
