Newly completed noise respite trials at Heathrow airport have produced positive results, officials said this week.

According to a Travel-News.co.uk report published on Thursday, the Early Morning Noise Respite Trial at Europe’s busiest airport resulted in significantly less noise for more than 100,000 Heathrow area residents.

The number comes via an independent review – dubbed the Helios Report – which was backed by the airport’s operating firm in addition to British Airways, Heathrow resident organisations and the National Air Traffic Service (NATS).

Officials said that trial was conducted over a five-month period and saw a substantial noise reduction between the hours of 04:30 and 06:00 for those living in many areas of East and South East London as well as for some in Berkshire.

John Stewart, who chairs the Heathrow residents group HACAN, told the media in a statement that despite the fact that many concerns remain unaddressed that the new scheme was a “significant achievement”.

Likewise, Heathrow’s sustainability director Matt Gorman called the results “very encouraging”.
