Major manufacturing firms in the UK have showed fresh support for the proposal to build a third runway at Heathrow airport.
Officials from the Engineering Employers Federation (EEF) recently wrote to ministers in London, urging the government to remove politics from the development of infrastructure in the UK.
The organisation’s plea follows the publishing of an EEF survey that showed businesses in Britain were largely worried that the UK would become less competitive if the Heathrow expansion plan does not move forward.
The EEF’s head of business environment policies Roger Salomone told the media on Tuesday that having “world-class” air links to London is a critical element of securing outside investments and that political prevarication has slowed Britain’s pace as a competitor. He went on to say that the UK needs “investment across the board” in terms of infrastructure, both at Heathrow and at regional airports as well.
The plea comes ahead of the unveiling of the government's latest transport strategy and spending review, which is set to be tabled in the summer.
