A giant set of Olympic rings is now on display at Heathrow airport.

The 12-metre wide, internationally recognised Olympic logo was hung in the west London airport’s Terminal 5 on Wednesday, less than six weeks from the start of the two-week Olympic events set to kick off late next month. Officials said some two million passengers would pass by the double decker bus-sized icon in the coming weeks.

The rings were unveiled in a ceremony attended by former Olympian Mark Foster, who said in a statement that he knew first-hand of the excitement and nervousness that athletes feel upon arrival in the Olympic host city. He said this entails an “electric” atmosphere and that the rings would help to convey whilst also welcoming everyone that passes through the terminal.

The classic five-ring symbol was originally designed to represent five adjoined continents. Similar displays are being installed at other major UK airports, most recently at Newcastle and Edinburgh, as well as at a number of iconic locations around Britain.

Paul Deighton, London 2012’s chief executive, said that the rings were a uniting symbol that inspire athletes from around the world. He said for Olympians, the symbol represents the culmination of hours upon hours of training to achieve the highest levels of athleticism.
