The Liberal Democrat party has voted against adding additional runways at Heathrow or any of London’s existing airports.

The move came during a Liberal Democrat conference at the weekend, in which officials also said that the party would not support the Boris Johnson-backed Thames Estuary airport proposal.

The news comes despite recent events that have suggested many MPs are willing to initiate a u-turn on the current government's blockade against expanding Heathrow. However, Lib Dem Norman Baker, the transport minister, said to reporters at the weekend that adding new runways at Heathrow, Stansted or Gatwick would bring “untold extra misery” for area residents.

Similarly, transport committee chairman and Lib Dem MP Julian Huppert said that it was time that Britain took the time to find balance between environmental concerns and its need to remain internationally connected.

Meanwhile, major figureheads from the aviation industry and some MPs continue to argue that limited capacity at London airports is causing harm to the UK economy and that expansion is needed to bring Britain out of its current recession.

The news follows the Prime Minister’s recent launch of a fresh consultation on airport capacity. The move has however drawn fire from airlines and ministers because the results will not be tabled for three years.
