Foggy weather caused substantial travel delays at Heathrow and London City airports on Wednesday.

Reports said early Wednesday morning that reduced visibility had lead to the cancellation of more than 180 flights at Heathrow, whist about 20 flights had been cancelled from City airport.

The impact of the thick fog created a knock-on effect on flights throughout the day, creating long lines and headaches for thousands of travellers. Affected routes from Heathrow included Stockholm, Frankfurt, Nice, Warsaw and Aberdeen as well as Leeds and Newcastle on Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, areas of fog remain a possibility in the South East on Thursday morning, although meteorologists say that it the conditions will likely not produce significant delays for air travel.

Despite the weather, some passengers reported that British Airways had cited problems with de-icing procedures as the primary source of delays. A spokeswoman said on behalf of the flag carrier that several of the carrier’s planes had developed ice within the engine compartments after having been parked overnight. She went on to add that safety is the carrier’s top priority and that it is essential that aircraft are completely free of ice before departure.
