According to airports operator BAA, a total of 12.7 million passengers were handled last month, which was a decline of 5.9 per cent on the same month last year.
A 7.3 per cent drop was seen in May, and BAA indicated that June saw the best underlying figures since September of 2008.
April’s figures were 2.3 per cent down on April of 2008, but the decline was actually 6.8 per cent when the impact of Easter falling later this year is removed.
Heathrow Airport experienced a relatively small decline, with 3.1 per cent fewer passengers for the month. The more modest loss relates in part to the many passengers who transfer to other flights at Heathrow.
Stansted, a major base for budget airline operations in the UK, was hit the hardest, with a drop in traffic of 11.5 per cent. Overall the airport has seen a decline of 14.4 per cent for the six months of 2009, as compared with the same period in 2008, as airlines slash capacity on decreased demand for air travel.
The airports operator indicated that European charter service was the only market segment that has not shown some improvement in the first half of this year.
