British budget airline Flybe has announced the launch of a new route from Glasgow airport to Shannon.

Flybe officials said on Friday that the new service would begin on 1 May 2013 and would operate throughout the year. Round-trip journeys will run three days weekly on Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

The airline expects the route to attract an addition 10,000 customers per year.

Officials from the low-cost firm said that Shannon was chosen as a new destination from the Scottish hub due to its growing business ties with the region in addition to its “cultural affinities” with Glasgow.

The carrier also said last week that it was to re-launch flights between Southampton and Isle of Man on the same day. The flights will also operate thrice weekly, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.

Managing director Dave Lees said on behalf of Southampton airport that his organisation was “delighted” to see the return of the route. He added that it was expected to prove popular among financial sector workers in addition to leisure travellers in the south of Britain as well as Isle of Man residents heading for cruise departures in Southampton.
