Last year was Glasgow airport’s busiest since 2009, officials announced on Friday.

2012 saw more 7.2 million travellers pass through the facility over the 12-month period, according to the airport’s official report. A strong end to the year highlighted the growth with some 440,000 people transiting the facility in December as long-haul traffic saw 21 per cent year-on-year increase.

Glasgow airport managing director Amanda McMillan said in a statement that the news comes on the heels of a year of “extremely hard” work. She added that the facility’s growth efforts had been “considerably successful”, noting the addition of several new routes and frequencies including the second-daily Emirates’ departure to Dubai.

The airport intends to extend its route network even further over the next year and that it will focus on tourism promotion with the city in order to harness the potential for greater leisure travel to Glasgow.

McMillan went on to say that despite the encouraging figures that airport figureheads are concerned that the upcoming rise in Air Passenger Duty rates will take a toll on passenger numbers in 2013.
