Customs officials at Glasgow airport have seized dozens of Giant African land snails.

According to a BBC report published on Thursday, the UK Border Force reclaimed the 36 live animals from a Nigerian Man arriving on a flight from Amsterdam in early September.

Each of the giant snails measures nearly 15cm in length and the passenger had claimed he was bringing them into the UK for food. However, the Border Force has said that the man did not have the necessary permits for bringing live animals into Britain.

Spokesman Murdo MacMillan said on behalf of the agency that that the vigilance of officers working at Glasgow airport had prevented any possible risk posed to native plants and wildlife. He went on to say that all travellers should be warned not to carry live animals or products of animal origin into the UK without a permit, as they can carry dangerous diseases or pests.

The BBC report said that the animals have since been handed over to a rescue organisation and will be checked for harmful parasites.

In addition to live animals, customs regulations apply to eggs, meat products, fish, honey, dairy, vegetables, fruits and plants being imported into the United Kingdom.
