Gatwick airport has officially submitted its second runway plan for governmental review.

According to a BBC report published on Tuesday, the airport’s operating firm finally sent details of the scheme to the Davies Commission amid the ongoing capacity crisis in the South East.

The facility’s chief executive Stewart Wingate told the media that the plans will see a second runway constructed just to the south of the facility’s existing airstrip. He went on to add that the scheme offers a “robust and compelling case” and that expanding the West Sussex airport is the best and most feasible solution to tackling limited capacity in the region.

Gatwick officials said that the project would cost between £5 billion and £9 billion and that the second runway could be on operation by 2025.

Several area councilors have since shown support for the scheme, including Louise Goldsmith of West Sussex County Council, who told the media that the expansion effort would provide substantial economic benefits for the area.

The news comes just a few weeks after Heathrow submitted its own official proposal for a second runway despite fierce opposition from local residents and a number of MPs.
