Gatwick airport has opened a new jet stand designed to accommodate the massive Airbus A380 aircraft.

Officials from the West Sussex airport confirmed early this week that the £6.4 million facility was ready for use, which will allow the airport to better accommodate the world’s largest commercial aircraft – the A380 – also known as the ‘super-jumbo’.

Emirates was the first carrier to make use of the stand at gate 110, pier 6, when one of its A380s arrived at Gatwick from Dubai on Tuesday.

The airport’s management said that he they hope the new stand will attract additional carriers that utilise the newest of Airbus’ wide-body jets.

Chief commercial officer Guy Stephenson said in a statement that the airport is “delighted” to put the new stand into use and that it was a major milestone in the facility's ongoing development. He added that it was a symbol of major changes and investments into Gatwick since it came under new ownership.

Similarly, Emirates’ vice president of UK operations Laurie Berryman told the media that the launch marked a historic day for the aircraft, noting that Emirates operates more A380s than any airline in the world.
