Low-cost airline Flybe has announced that it will discontinue service between Gatwick and Belfast.

The BBC reported on Thursday that the carrier has confirmed that its route between Belfast City and the West Sussex hub will be suspended in March 2014 as a result of having sold off the landing slots to another carrier. EasyJet is reported to be the buyer in the sale.

Brian Ambrose, chief executive of Belfast City airport, told the media that the airport regularly sees airline changes and that he was confident that the facility would be able to secure a replacement carrier for the route prior to the termination of Flybe’s service.

Ambrose added that growth at the airport has continued in recent months and other new routes may be added before the spring in addition to Gatwick flights.

The news comes as Flybe seeks to relieve mounting debt via selling off all of its 25 Gatwick landing slots. Analysts say that the effort could bring the airline a cash injection of up to £20 million but would see the firm remove its presence from Gatwick entirely.
