No-frills airline Easyjet has confirmed that it is to begin flights between Gatwick airport and Jersey.

The airline’s executives told the media on Wednesday that the new service would begin next March when Flybe pulls out of Gatwick. However, the BBC has reported that Easyjet is to run three return flights on the route per day, whereas Flybe currently offers four departures each way.

Jersey’s economic development minister senator Alan Maclean said in a statement that Easyjet will be able to bring up to 250,000 passengers to Jersey each year from Gatwick alone, making it a vital link for the island’s businesses and immensely important for the tourism industry.

Likewise, commercial manager Ali Gayward said in a statement that the airline would be offering a new selection of low-cost seating on the route that will enable the local economy to grow even further. She added that the new schedule would also allow business travellers to fly in and out of Jersey on the same day.
