British Airways has announced plans to increase the firm’s number of flights between Jersey and Gatwick.

According to a BBC report published on Wednesday, the UK flag carrier will add an extra weekday frequency in March when Flybe discontinues its service between the two airports. The move will bring the carrier’s total number of Gatwick to Jersey flights to six per week.

The news comes following the announcement last month that Flybe would be selling off all of its Gatwick-based aircraft amid efforts to pay off the carrier’s mounting debt. The move will result in the discontinuation of all Flybe’s Gatwick routes early next year.

British Airways first began serving the route in the mid 1930s under the name British European Airways.

Doug Bannister, Group chief executive of the Port of Jersey, called the announcement “excellent news” for the island’s businesses, visitors and residents alike.

Similarly, BA’s head of Gatwick operations Colin Lacy told the media that the new flights would provide passengers with more options as well as improved connectivity to points around the European region.
