Officials closed the London airport at around 6:45am local time on Sunday. Police from Sussex reported that a passenger found a note on a flight arriving from Dubai "implying there may be a suspicious device on board."

The incident occurred on Emirates flight EK 011, which originated in Dubai, according to an airline representative. Around 10 minutes before the scheduled landing at Gatwick, the passenger on board found the note.

According to the police, 164 passengers were on board. All passengers and crew were successfully evacuated from the plane, and then police and members of a bomb disposal team searched the aircraft and all the luggage.

“This was potentially an extremely serious situation and we immediately mounted an emergency response,” said Sussex Police Chief Inspector Ed Henriet. “At all times public safety was the key priority. All the agencies worked together to provide a coordinated response and minimize disruption and the airport operated as normal during this time.”

He added: “We are very grateful for the calm and understanding response from those directly affected, including the passengers who were on board and those waiting to meet them.”
