Australian carrier Qantas is reeling from yet another strike, this time by mechanics, as operations return to normal following a strike on Tuesday. Tuesday’s action, by ground staff and baggage handlers, as well as staff handling freight, catering and other areas of transport.

Tomorrow’s strike, by maintenance engineers in Melbourne, will bring travellers more cancellations and delays, adding to the woes created two days ago when a walk-out by as many as 3,800 Qantas employees upset the travel arrangements of more than 6,000 passengers.

The industrial action on Friday is already expected to cause problems for eight flights at Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and Brisbane airports, according to a spokesman for Qantas. Qantas is cancelling a pair of flights serving the Melbourne-Sydney route.

Another six flights are expected to experience delays of as much as an hour. The airline said some 1,300 passengers are being hit by the industrial action. The Transport Worker’s Union (TWU) also implemented a 48-hour ban against ‘higher duties’.

The TWU ban – against work involving administration and paperwork – started on Tuesday and was expected to affect services until the end of the week. Tomorrow’s action by engineers in the Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Assocation will also mean Qantas has to stand other staff down on full pay.

The TWU, meanwhile, is threatening yet another round of action by ground workers. That stoppage, which could come next week still has to be ratified by union members, however.
