The Marshall Group is seeing turnover at the Cambridge Airport section of the family-owned business approach £2 million. The bumper revenues indicate the success of increased activity at the aviation hub.
The group’s strategy saw the airport unit the last division of the British business to get major investment. The group’s growth strategy very much looks to be paying off.
The new strategic focus on commercial operations was launched six months ago. A new management team was brought in and the airport is now boasting of ambitious plans for expansion.
Cambridge Airport has boosting business aviation movements by 18 per cent, year-on-year, with fuel sales rising 41 per cent. The airport has also seen parking fee revenues climb by 50 per cent.
The business in instrument approach training has also expanded, with the latest figures showing a 5 per cent increase, year-on-year. The biggest growth area for the airport has been new operators, brokers and private owners. A major portion of charters is coming out of Germany and France.
Archie Garden, airport director, says that bloodstock and horse racing activity at Newmarket has continued to generate business for the airport. He noted that race days brought significant upticks in activity by charter helicopters and executive jets.
The increase activity from business aviation has been supplemented by increasing numbers of flights by air ambulances. More patients have been heading to Addenbooke’s Hospital, where a new trauma unit has opened, as well as Papworth Hospital.
The airport’s run of success looks set to continue, with a range of initiatives in the works. It will confirm a franchised fixed-base operator before next year and a GPS approach system is coming online in September.
