The Unite union says it has recommended union members accept the latest offer from BAA. BAA has offered to boost pay by two per cent as well as pay a minimum lump sum of £500. Unite will now ballot its membership in the next few days. The result of the voting is expected in three weeks. Though Unite members had rejected an earlier pay off from BAA of 1.5 per cent, the threat of strikes this month was averted when Unite and BAA agreed the new pay offer on Monday.

The lump sum that is on offer would be a profit-related bonus and the payout is guaranteed to be at least £500. That could rise to as much as £700 if BAA can hit its earnings targets for the full year. If BAA manages to reach 110 per cent of the earnings target, members stand to receive £900, the maximum available. BAA said the newest offer was fair given the ongoing economic challenges to the aviation industry. The union agreed that this is a fair offer and pointed out that after tough negotiations, Unite had delivered to members double the original offer from BAA. Furthermore, the new offer comes with no strings attached.
