The Liberal Democrats have given themselves 24 hours reach agreement with the Conservatives. Failing this, the Lib Dems could seek a deal with the Labour party. The Lib Dems are keen on electoral reforms but they need to work quickly or both the public and markets could turn against them. Constitutional reform may be the biggest sticking point in talks. Some Conservatives are threatening to mutiny if Cameron agrees to Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg’s demand for constitutional amendment.

The Tories and the Liberal Democrats already held several rounds of talks in secret. The two parties say a deal is close but that would involve major compromise on their political platforms. The Liberal Democrats share more political common ground with the Labour party. The Lib Dems exploited this fact in recent talks with Brown aimed at least somewhat at putting more pressure on Cameron. There is, however, broad agreement of the need to cut the deficit and maintain economic stability.

As a result of last week’s election Britain has what is called a ‘hung parliament’. The government lacks the majority it needs to control parliament. As talks continue, all parties must maintain the impression a deal is close, as any perceived fundamental lack stability could hit sentiment both in the financial markets and amongst the public.
