The introduction of new technology and a relaxed security procedure for transit passengers is to make air travel with liquids in hand luggage simpler within the next few years. Under current restrictions, passengers can not take any more than 100ml of liquid in one container on to a plane in hand luggage. This also applies to transit passengers who are using the UK as a hub to get somewhere else.

Brian Simpson, chairman of the European Parliament transport committee, said they will first be looking at removing the restrictions for transit passengers that have in all good faith, bought their duty free whisky or perfume from another country and travelling home. It is hoped that these types of travellers through European airports, will be able to pass with their liquids by April of 2011.

The next step is for technology to catch up with the 21st century and all European airports to have machines installed that are capable of detecting liquid substances for explosives and other dangerous materials. Mr Simpson has outlined a date for somewhere during the year 2013.

This move is different to the introduction of body scanners at airports throughout the UK and Europe. The body scanners introduction has been sped up because of the attempted bombing of Northwest Airlines jet on Christmas Day above Detroit.
