According to BAA, the airports it runs suffered a notable fall in passenger numbers during June 2010, compared to the same month last year. As a result of the strike by cabin crew at British Airways, BAA says it handled 1.7 per cent fewer people. Without the strike, BAA says it would have expected the same level of traffic as last year.
BAA currently operates six airports in the UK. Though it sold Gatwick last year for £1.5 billion, it still runs Heathrow and Stansted in the London area, as well as Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen in Scotland, plus the airport at Southampton.
Cabin crew at British Airways have held a series of strikes since earlier this year. Altogether, they’ve amassed 22 days of industrial action in 2010, with nine of those in June alone. BA says it flew 2.57 million passengers in June, 11 per cent fewer than in June of 2009.
The worst-hit of BAA’s airports was Glasgow. Passenger numbers there were down seven per cent, year-on-year. Though British Airways does not fly through Stansted, that airport saw 5.2 per cent fewer passengers in June compared to the year before.
