Cabin crew at British Airways say they are one step closer to calling for strike action, after a staff suspension the union says has caused ‘dismay and anger’. The Unite union says it is closer to calling an official strike ballot. The move follows the airline suspending a member of staff for having held a Christmas collection in support of sacked and suspended colleagues. The latest suspension has ratcheted up tensions among staff who have already held strikes through an increasingly-bitter disagreement that now goes back nearly two years. Unite general secretary Tony Woodly said the airline’s suspension of Andrea Molton was going to worsen the existing dispute unless she was reinstated. The union wrote to Tony McCarthy, director of people at British Airways. In the letter, Mr Woodley urges Mr McCarthy to intervene in getting Ms Molton’s suspension immediately. He says failure to do so will lead to consequences that will be entirely the responsibility of BA management. According to union insiders, the suspension has increased the chances that a strike ballot will be held before Christmas. The union must, however, give notice of seven days before it holds a vote. The ballot is typically expected to last a month so any strike action is unlikely to happen before Christmas.
