The Unite union is balloting cabin crew at British Airways on a proposal to hold strikes that would cause travel misery during up to three months’ of big holidays next year. If approved, the industrial action would hit the Royal Wedding and Easter holidays, as well as the half-term break in February.
Unite gave notice to BA on Tuesday that it planned to ballot crew on industrial action. The ballot will start Tuesday next week and will last a month, ending 21 January.
If cabin crew vote in favour of strikes, the union must then give another seven days notice of a date for strike action. Industrial action is then allowed to last for up to three months before the union must ballot members again.
If crew vote in favour of strike action, it would mean millions of families could face chaos during the half-term school holidays in the middle of February. Industrial action could also hit the lengthy upcoming holidays scheduled over the Easter period and the Royal Wedding taking place between Prince William and Kate Middleton that will take place on 29 April.
