Delta, struggling with soaring fuel costs, will discontinue approximately 13% of its flights originating at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), including nonstop services to Boston, Massachusetts, Columbus, Ohio and Hartford, Connecticut, according to information published in a national flight database.

These cuts would be the most dramatic for LAX thus far, which to date has escaped much of the industry-wide flight cuts that are being employed to cope with mounting operating costs. Delta is the fourth-largest carrier operating from LAX.

In addition to the cuts, passengers traveling to Mexico and other Latin American destinations will pay higher fares. In all, Delta plans to discontinue service on nine routes from LAX, beginning at the end of August. This will include flights to several cities in Mexico.

These cutbacks mark an end to the Atlanta-based carrier’s expansion plans for LAX, and its intention to make the airport one of its major hubs. Earlier this year, Delta cut other Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Ixtapa, Mexico from its LAX schedule. Planned non-stop service to D.C.’s Dulles International Airport has been scrapped.

These service cuts have not been announced by the airline yet, but LAX officials were informed of the changes last week. A Delta spokesperson wouldn’t confirm the exact routes that will be cut, but said that the reductions were part of the airline’s overall plan to reduce domestic flights by 13 percent.
