The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has warned there is a heightened risk of terrorist attacks in Europe, especially in countries like Germany and France. The FCO has updated travel advice for Europe to an enhanced state of warning.

The FCO had maintained a warning about a ‘general threat’. It has raised this advice to a ‘high threat’ of attacks by al-Qaeda on the continent. The move comes as the US government also raises its warning level of the risk in Europe of unspecified attacks.

An FCO spokesperson said France and Germany, in common with other large European nations, are subject to a high threat of terrorist attack. As a result, the FCO has upgraded its travel advice. The FCO’s website is now warning of the potential for ‘indiscriminate’ attacks against places that see frequent visits by foreign travellers and expatriates.

The travel advice takes input from a number of sources such as the UK’s Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre, intelligence and security agencies, diplomatic reports and media coverage, local intelligence and reports from embassies. Though UK terrorism threat levels can rated be up to ‘critical’, ‘high threat’ is the highest threat level the FCO records. Security sources are warning of the risk of attacks such as that seen in Mumbai in 2008.
