Ryanair discontinues more routes
Ryanair discontinues more routes - Blackpool Airport News
Airport news for Blackpool on 01/12/2008.
Blackpool airport has become the latest in a series of airports that Ryanair is pulling out of, after the budget carrier said that it would not operate at an airport that charged passengers a tax for airport development.
The carrier is also discontinuing flights from Newquay airport, in this case because the airport is shutting down for at least three weeks in December. An announcement about whether these services will resume has not been made.
As this happens with Ryanair, the major scheduled airlines are reporting that October saw a rise of 1.8 per cent in traffic, over the same month last year.
Air passengers are now being able to cash in on the "savage price war" among airlines as they struggle to cope with the economic downturn, according to an industry insider.
Willie Walsh of BA and other airline chiefs predicted in June that cheap air travel was about to end, at their annual summit held in Istanbul.
Although the price of oil has dropped sharply since July, airlines have now found that they are struggling to fill seats due to the worsening global economic condition.
"The airline industry is no more immune from the current economic situation than any other high street retailer," said a source in the industry.
