Officials from Birmingham airport have asked the government to introduce a ‘congestion charge’ at Heathrow and Gatwick.

The airport’s management says that travellers should be urged to utilise airports outside of the South East, as the debate continues on how to solve a capacity shortage overwhelming Heathrow. In a letter to the committee on airport capacity, the airport has made its case for the idea of a ‘multi-hub’ scenario in Britain, rather than focusing all major traffic on a single airport.

Birmingham airport chief executive Paul Kehoe said in a statement that any serious effort to resolve the issue should properly “balance capacity restrictions” on airports surrounding the capital whilst also enacting policies that encourage passengers and airlines to make use of other major airports in the UK.

Kehoe and his organisation have also asked ministers to consider temporary waivers on the Air Passenger Duty for new carriers introducing flights to Britain in order to promote new links with increasingly important long-haul destinations.

Meanwhile, others continue to fight for a third runway at Heathrow, despite steadfast opposition. However, last week saw the Prime Minister criticise London mayor Boris Johnson for completely ruling out the prospect, saying that all options must be on the table for what he called a “national decision”.
