Heads from the UK’s top airlines have said that Birmingham will never be one of Britain’s primary hub airports.

Officials from British Airways and Virgin Atlantic said last week that Birmingham and similar airports are not suitable to provide a solution to capacity constraints in the South East.

The news comes after Birmingham airport officials called on the government to encourage the aviation industry and the travelling public to make better use of existing airports rather than expanding London gateways or building new facilities.

The joint statement from BA and Virgin said that Heathrow and Gatwick airports are running at capacity because the public prefers to fly from them, and that Birmingham is not full because its less desirable. Bosses also argue that airlines and governments in growing markets are not interested in launching new links to other airports, only to Heathrow.

Meanwhile, Birmingham continues to promote its plan to double its capacity by extending its current runway and without making any changes to surrounding infrastructure. However, officials said that the government must promote the facility as a national gateway in order for the plan to work and to take stress off of overcrowded facilities serving the capital.
