Travellers face yet more travel misery, after the Court of Appeal overturned an earlier injunction against a strike by British Airways cabin crew. Earlier in the week, the High Court had granted BA a block on industrial action because of a technical error in Unite’s ballot of members. Airline employees are due to begin the first of three five-day walkouts on Monday. In total, British Airways crew will strike for 15 days.
The earlier court move by BA, made just hours before the union was scheduled to begin the first of a rolling serious of walkouts, ultimately gave the airline just a short respite but it has further upset the union. Unite members remain angry about British Airways’ treatment of those who took part in what the union says was perfectly legal strike action in past months.
Though the issues at stake in the previous walkouts have largely been addressed, the fallout from those strikes has resulted in a seemingly intractable dispute. British Airways says it has given as much as it can. Unite says that unless the airline restores the cheap travel perks taken away from members as punishment for previous action, the latest round of strikes will go ahead as scheduled. Two further five-day walkouts start on 30 May and 5 June, respectively.
