Newham Council's recent decision to permit an increase in annual flight numbers from London City Airport has led to a legal campaign protesting the decision.
Formal legal proceedings have already been launched, with campaigners strongly resisting the 50,000 extra flights that could result from the council's decision. The addition of 50,000 flights would take London City Airport's total number of flights up to 120,000.
Campaigners fear the extra flights would lead to a significant increase in noise and pollution levels, directly affecting the residents in the vicinity and under flight-paths, even as Newham Council insists the decision was correctly made after proper consultation.
Campaigners include activists from several groups, including the Friends of the Earth group, the Fight the Flights group and HACAN (Heathrow Campaign).
Campaign leaders have appealed to members of the public concerned about the environment and the cause to help fund the legal challenge through donations.
A number of local politicians from parts of the would-be affected areas like Redbridge and Waltham Forest have also expressed their concern. Representatives from multiple parties, including the Green party, the Conservatives, Labour and Liberal Democrats have also voiced concerns about the growing number of flights operating over East London.
For its part, London City Airport pints out that the increase in flights would serve to boost the local economy, as well as to create a number of jobs.
