Aberdeen airport has changed its official name.

The facility is now known as Aberdeen International, officials from the airport’s owner – the former BAA – said this week. The move comes following the firm’s announcement in 2012 that it was to shed the BAA title and rename each airport under an individual name; Heathrow is now Heathrow Airport Ltd.

Airport executives say they are hoping the new brand will help with Aberdeen's current expansion efforts, which are particularly focused on leisure travellers.

Derek Provan, managing director of the facility, said in a statement that his organisation has had success in bringing new international routes to Aberdeen and that it will continue to seek further additions. He went on say that the success along with the name change make it an “exciting time” for the airport and for its customers.

The news came just one day before plans to launch two new Aberdeen airport hotels were revealed. The forthcoming Ibis and Novotel properties will feature a combined 250 bedrooms in Dyce. Aberdeen city council approved the £25 million deal this week, according to a BBC report issued on Thursday (10 January).
