Aberdeen airport saw a substantial rise in passengers last month, officials said on Monday.

New figures from the north Scotland gateway revealed that the facility hosted 11.3 per cent more passengers in October than it did during the same month in 2011. The total exceeds more than 316,000 travellers and marks the busiest October ever seen at the airport.

The largest growth was in international traffic, which climbed more than 16 per cent, whilst domestic traffic increased by 10.2 per cent.

Likewise, officials from the Heathrow Airport Holdings-owned airport also said that helicopter traffic had significantly increased, as figures showed a rise of 6.6 per cent.

Derek Provan, the airport’s managing director, told the media that the figures were “remarkably strong” considering the current state of the economy in Britain. He added that it was the second best performance during October the history of Aberdeen airport and attributed the success to a surprisingly strong October school break.

Provan went on to criticise the UK government’s Air Passenger Duty fees, which he said were leaving British airports “uncompetitive” as a result of the levy’s “punishingly” high rates.
